If I report someone will they be able to get my details for any reason?
- No. Information given to us is treated as confidential and is not passed on to anyone for any reason.
If I give my name when telling you about someone will they be told it?
- No. You do not need to give your name but if you do it is kept secret.
Will I be able to get an update on the investigation?
- No. Our investigation team will not be able to tell you about an ongoing investigation. Everyone is entitled to privacy even those under investigation.
Do you investigate every case reported to you?
- Yes. We look into every report of fraud that we get.
How do I know that the investigation has been carried out properly?
- Investigations are carried out carefully and professionally by our team of trained investigators.
Does an investigation take long?
- Every investigation is different, some can be done quickly but this often depends on the amount information we get.
- Other cases may not have enough information to identify the person
- Sometimes we get told about people who do not get benefit
We would encourage you to give us as much information as possible.
What type of information would I need to give to report someone?
We need:
- the full name of the person,
- their address,
- age,
- description of what they look like and
- what type of fraud they are doing.
Also, if they are working:
- how they travel to work,
- what transport they use,
- who they work for,
- what time they leave and return home.
If they were living with someone:
- the name of their partner,
- a description of how their partner looks
- any transport used,
- whether they or their partner are working.
We ask for information that is about the type of fraud being done.
Can I report a case of benefit fraud on-line?
- Yes. We have an online form on this website; called Report a cheat.
Why does this form take me to another website?
- At the moment we are using the Department for Work & Pensions website in England, but we are building a form for our own website.
Are my details kept confidential when using the form on the other website?
- Yes. The information you give on this report a cheat form will be sent to our Northern Ireland Investigators. All information is kept secret.
Are there any other ways of giving information?
- Yes. There is a free phone and minicom system also available free of charge.
Are all cases of benefit fraud prosecuted?
- All cases of social security benefit fraud are considered for prosecution.
